Medicare Clarity

Medicare is a federal health insurance program in the United States primarily for people
who are 65 years old or older. It also covers some younger individuals with disabilities
and those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

• Medicare Part A: Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care services.

• Medicare Part B: Covers outpatient care, doctor's services, preventive services, and some medical supplies.

• Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage): Offers an alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and includes coverage for hospital (Part A) and medical (Part B) services, often with additional benefits such as prescription drug coverage (Part D), dental, vision, and wellness programs.

• Medicare Part D: Provides prescription drug coverage for Medicare beneficiaries.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

The initial enrollment period begins three months prior to your birthday, the month of your birthday, and three months after your birthday. If you miss this seven-month window, you may have to wait for the Fall Open Enrollment Period which lasts from October 15 to December 7th each year.

General Enrollment Period (GEP)

The general enrollment period is for those already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and is from January 1 to March 31. During this time, you can either change Medicare Advantage plans or switch to Original Medicare. Coverage begins the month after you sign up for the GEP.

Late Enrollment Penalty

If you delay signing up for Medicare, you may incur a late penalty adding 10% to your monthly Part B premium for every 12 months you wait. You can avoid the penalty if you’re still working and have health insurance based on that job. It is best to speak to a Medicare Specialist so you can avoid paying higher premiums.

Costs and Coverage

Most people do not pay a premium for Medicare Part A if they or their spouse have paid Medicare taxes while working. There's no limit on out-of-pocket costs in Medicare (Part A and Part B). Medigap plans can help reduce the burden of out-of-pocket costs.

Medicare Part B and Part D have monthly premiums, deductibles, and co-payments.

Medicare Advantage plans may have additional premiums, deductibles, and co-payments, but they often include extra benefits not covered by Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage has a yearly limit on your out-of-pocket costs depending on your plan.

Medicare Supplement Insurance- Medigap

A Medigap policy is extra insurance from a private company that helps pay your out-of-pocket costs (such as your co-pay) for Original Medicare Part A and Part B. Policies are standardized and labeled A through N, and the basic benefits in each are the same. Most policies don't include prescription drug coverage.

Preventive Services- Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B covers many preventive services, including annual wellness visits, flu shots, certain cancer screenings, and cardiovascular screenings.
